Johnny: Surya is a great actor - TOI Article

TOI talks to Johnny Tri Nguyen, who plays the baddie in Surya's forthcoming film, in an exclusive...

Hollywood actor and stuntman Johnny Tri Nguyen, who has worked in films like Martial Law and Spider-man 2, has been making frequent trips to Chennai in the last couple of months. Reason? He's been busy completing his first Tamil film, 7am Arivu, with Surya and director A R Murugadoss. The actor gets talking to Chennai Times from the sets of his Vietnamese film, Redemption...

It all began when...
I was a stuntman in Hollywood and action choreographer Peter Hein was in the US for some work. We met accidentally, three years ago, got talking about the action industry over lunch and exchanged numbers as well. Seven months ago, I got a call from him, asking me if I was interested in working for a Tamil movie. He said the part suited me well and involved a lot of action sequences. So, I sent the director A R Murugadoss a few links to my Hollywood and Vietnamese films. He too liked my work and within a few days, I was on my way to Chennai to seal the deal. I began shooting for the film last September and I was in Chennai last week as well to shoot for the film.

Role Call
I play the villain in the film. There are quite a few scenes that have elaborate fights between Suriya and me. I was a stuntman and turned an actor recently. I've had the opportunity to work on several big budget films as well. When I started work on 7am Arivu, I had no expectations. But I was pleasantly surprised when Murugadoss asked me to shoot a lengthy action scene on a highway in the middle of a traffic jam on the very first day of the schedule. Cars were flipping and vehicles were crashing all around. I was quite surprised when I learnt about the unit's pre-production work and the number of days they spent in choreographing the scene. The film has everything that would make it on par with Hollywood action films.

Surya, the superstar!
Surya is a great actor and has a lot of talent. More than that, he's a good colleague. We spent almost 42 days on just one fight sequence. He is very patient and has a greater understanding of his work. He didn't use a body double for any of the action sequences and did all the dangerous stunts himself. I now understand why he has such a huge fan following. No wonder, he's a superstar in the south!

Director cool
I haven't seen any of Murugadoss's films. But our thoughts matched perfectly while we were working together. He is assured on the sets and doesn't doubt his vision. This gives his actors a lot of confidence and in turn, the outcome is excellent.

No language woes
In this film, I play a foreigner. So, I didn't have to talk in Tamil at all. And, on the sets, everyone knew English. So, language was never an issue. However, I did learn a few Tamil words like vanakkam and nandri.

7am Arivu villain is a Vietnamese!

AR Murgadoss has chosen a Vietnamese Johnny Tri Nguyen as the main villain in his 7am Arivu, which has Surya and Shruthi Haasan in the lead.

Johnny is a Vietnamese American film and television actor, stunt double and martial artist.
Johnny Tri Nguyen is a martial arts expert and was seen in films like Tom-Yum-Goong and Cradle 2 the Grave.

His work as a stunt double includes the role of Spider-Man in Spider-Man 2 and as the Green Goblin in the first feature film.
He practices deadly combats like lien feng kwo, wushu, tae kwon do, tai chi, aikido, and vovinam.
Murgadoss has shot some deadly martial arts scenes featuring Surya and Johnny Tri Nguyen in Thailand.

Murgadoss in an interview has said: "The action scenes of 7am Arivu will be as deadly and fantastic as a Hollywood action movie. We have special effects from the Stan Winston Studios in LA, to make the visuals world class."

Surya and Hari come together again- Deccan chronicle Article

The combo of hot actor Surya and mass filmmaker Hari has always worked wonders at the box office. Both Surya and Hari have churned out big hits like Aaru, Vel and Singam. In fact, it was Aaru which brought out a different dimension of Surya.
According to reliable sources, the two will be combining professionally for a high action masala film. Insiders reveal that Hari has written a script which has a gangster subject and his first choice for the protagonist was Surya. Apparently, when Surya heard the one-line script summary, he immediately decided to sign on.
Another report doing the rounds is that Bollywood sizzler Katrina Kaif might be roped in as Surya’s love interest. It may be recalled that the gorgeous Katrina was offered the earlier Surya-Hari venture Singam, but her busy B’Town schedule didn’t leave her time for the project.
Presently Suriya is busy with 7 Aum Arivu and then he will move on to Maatraan with K.V. Anand. Hari will also complete his current film Vengai and then will start fine-tuning the script for Surya’s film.

Election makes Surya happy

The huge turn out of voters (80 per cent) during the elections to Tamil Nadu Assembly on Wednesday has made Surya happy. “This shows the power of democracy,” the actor said.
Surya, who did his democratic duty at a school in T Nagar, was accompanied by father Sivakumar, brother Karthi and sister Brinda. “I am happy that people are voting with all interest,” he said.
Sneha, who too exercised her franchise in Chennai on Wednesday, was seen with father Rajaram. Sporting her usual smile, the actress showed her inked finger to the waiting lensmen.
She said: “Voting is a democratic duty. No one should miss it. I would always make it a point to cast my vote in each and every election. I am proud to be a citizen of India and proud to vote to the candidate of my choice.”

7Aum arivu: Surya's big budget venture

The latest buzz about Surya's 7am arivu is that the film is made with a whopping budget of Rs. 84 crores. Interestingly, this is also the highest budget film in Surya's career till date. Recently, producer Udayanidhi Stalin and director Murugadoss approached US based Stan Winston Studios, who has created some mesmerizing graphics in Cameroon'sAvatar and Shankar's Enthiran, to do the visual effects. The star cast of 7Aum Arivuincludes Shruti Haasan, Abhinaya, Avinash, Jai, and Johny Tri Nguyen. The technical team includes Harris Jayaraj (music), Ravi K. Chandran (cinematography) and Anthony Gonsalves (editing).

The film is based on the life of a circus artiste and Surya plays the role of a trapeze artiste cum animal trainer. Sources reveal that Surya will be seen in a dual role, playing a contemporary character in one scene and another (through flashback) in a previous birth.

Shankar next movie with Surya!

Here is the breaking news about the much awaited combo of director Shankar and handsome hunk Surya. This is one of the missing partnerships in Kollywood from a very longtime. It was Surya who was supposed to reprise the role of Aamir Khan in the Tamil remake Nanban but finally the offer landed with Vijay.

The saying "Better late than Never" can be said here as Surya is likely to star in the direction of Shankar. It is said that the director had made a special script ready for Surya, where he stars as a solo-hero and this is the reason for Surya not been in the remake of 3 Idiots which is a multi starrer. The official confirmation is awaited but this is the much needed announcement as his fans are raving for this outstanding combination.

Meanwhile Shankar is busy with Nanban and recently he is back from London after having music sittings with Harris Jayraj. He also has a glimpse of the locations in London, Buckingham and other places for filming few important sequences and three songs. It is heard that Shankar and Manoj Paramahamsa have finalized few locations and mostly during next schedule they may move to London to shoot two songs tuned by Harris Jayaraj

‘I cajoled Surya back to college’ - Deccan Chronicle Article

Like for many of us, Surya’s college admission was also fraught with anxiety. Actor Sivakumar was looking back at when he was trying to get his son admitted to the B Com programme in Loyola College.
“The then principal was not very keen to admit Surya saying that one more seat will be wasted if he admits a star’s son. I convinced him saying that Surya is not like others and he would complete the course. Till the beginning of the third year, everything was smooth. I was happy that Surya had kept up my promise until one day he gave me a shock. He came and told me that he was not interested in going to college any more. I was literally taken aback. On probing, I realised that he had three arrears from the previous semester. I had to cajole him and finally somehow packed him back to college.”

Sivakumar, father of actors Suriya and Karthi was addressing a huge gathering of more than 5000 at the Velalar College for Women in Thindal near Erode recently. The veteran actor this time around was trying to inculcate values in youngsters through poet Bharathi’s timeless verses.
He used examples from his own personal life, sharing previously unknown facts about how he came to Chennai at the age of 16 and about becoming a yoga expert.
“I lived in a house shared by 25 people and most of them were non vegetarians. We had only two makeshift toilets for the entire bachelor crowd. To avoid the crowd, I used to wake up as early as 4.30 am and go to the restrooms. I had a lot of time left in the morning and that is when I started learning yoga through books, on the terrace of the building. I practice it even today.”
The actor was concerned that the younger generation are under constant stress, especially those working in the IT sector.

“Recently, I was shocked when I came to know through a close source that the Corporation authorities had found a ton of condoms while cleaning the drainage in a large IT hub. I will not blame the boys and girls who work hours together, even on night shifts. Sex is a biological need and safe sex is more important. What I would suggest to these girls working in the IT sector is to get married no sooner than they get into a job.”
