Audio Beat - Maattrraan : The Hindu Article

What it is about…
Maatraan, starring Suriya and Kajal Agarwal in the lead, is produced by Kalpathi S. Agoram, Kalpathi S. Suresh and Kalpathi S. Ganesh, and directed by cinematographer-director K. V. Anand. The others involved with the film are Subha (dialogues), Rajeevan (art), Harris Jayaraj (music), S. Soundarrajan (camera), Anthony (editor) and Peter Hein (stunts). The audio of Maatraan was released in Singapore with a live concert by Harris Jayaraj and his team of musicians. Actors such as Anjali, Neetu Chandra, Dhanshika, Julia Bliss and Poorna danced on the occasion. The audio was released by the Maatraan unit and received by directors Gautam Vasudev Menon, Lingusamy, Hari and A. L. Vijay.

Music highlights
There are five songs in the album, each bearing the stamp of music director Harris Jayaraj. ‘Yaaro Yaaro,’ sung by Karthik and written by Thamarai, is a clear winner — here the humming by Priya Hemesh is soothing. ‘Rettai Kathirae,’ penned by Na. Muthukumar, is another good number rendered by Krish, M. K. Balaji and Mili. ‘Naani Koni,’ written by Viveka and sung by Vijay Prakash, Karthik and Shreya Goshal, grows on the listener. ‘Theeyae Theeyae’ follows next — written by Pa. Vijay, it is sung by Franco, Aalaap Raju, Sathyan, Charulatha Mani and Suchitra. New ideas run through ‘Kaal Mulaitha Poovae,’ courtesy Karky. Sung well by Javed Ali, Mahalakshmi Iyer and Nincy Vincent, it’s sure to click with listeners.

What they say…
Producers Kalpathi S. Agoram, Kalpathi S. Suresh and Kalpathi S. Ganesh: We have produced and distributed more than 30 films in the past seven years. We believe story is the soul of a film. When Anand narrated the line to us, we immediately asked him to work on the screenplay. We knew he had the ability to execute such a script that had complexities in the characterisation of its lead actor. Maatraan has all the elements required to make it a commercial blockbuster. To play conjoined twins is not easy, as every scene had to be shot twice and who better than actor Suriya could pull it off?
Director K.V. Anand: I read about conjoined twins and their way of life while on a flight. After discussing it with my assistants, I came up with a screenplay with a beautiful twist. I casually mentioned the story to Suriya and forgot all about it. A year ago, he called me and asked me to work on the script. That’s how Maatraan began. It was a tough job not just for the lead player, but also for the technicians — it was like working on two films at the same time. The film has come out well and I am sure Suriya’s fans are in for a big treat.

Hero Suriya: I wanted to try something new in each film. When Anand narrated the story to me, I did not respond for some time. But when we decided to do it, we went the whole hog. A hard task master, he would not give up until every frame was to his expectation. And we all know there is no gain without pain. I saw the first print; I am sure Maatraan will be a milestone in my career.
Music director Harris Jayaraj: K. V. Anand and I have worked together before, so we are familiar with each other’s style of functioning. All the songs inMaatraan are situation-oriented and have come out well. We have used some new instruments in one of the songs which, I feel, will go down well with the listeners. Besides, the re-recording has shaped up to my satisfaction.

Surya gets 15 cr salary, 15 cr for Telugu rights?

If the latest buzz is true, then it looks like Surya has now become the highest paid star in K-Town. Trade sources are claiming the actor is getting paid ` 15 crore outright salary and ` 15 crore for the Telugu rights for his film with Lingusamy. If this is indeed true, then it puts the actor at the top of the big league in Kollywood.

A trade source, on condition of anonymity, tells us, "Surya has a number of films lined up, both for release and for which he will start work on this year. And he will receive ` 30 crore for his latest film, which includes the ` 15 crore Telugu rights of the movie as well." The actor has a very big market in Andhra Pradesh as his popularity has been growing extensively over the last few years.

The source continues, "For Maattrraan, he was paid ` 12 crore outright plus the Telugu rights, which were said to be around ` 15 crore, making it a gross of ` 27 crore. And for his film with Lingusamy, he has been offered Rs 15 crore as outright payment. The Telugu rights, estimated at ` 15 crore, is said to make up the rest of his remuneration. In the current scenario, he surpasses his contemporaries in Kollywood."

While Lingusamy remained unavailable for comment as he was out of the country, his brother, Subashchandra Bose, declined to comment. He said, "I'm not at liberty to discuss remuneration. All I can tell you is that the film will go on floors from February, 2013."
